What is the new WorkWell Service in South Cumbria?

A light touch, early-intervention service available to anyone aged >18 with a health condition who:

  • Needs support to remain in work
  • Needs support managing a health condition in order to return to work from a sickness absence
  • Needs support to (re)start work and has been unemployed due to a health condition
WorkWell is not suitable for individuals with complex health needs/conditions or who are long term unemployed (circa >12 months).

The below is the minimum eligibility criteria and referrals will be accepted from anyone who meets the following criteria:

  • Your home address OR the address of your GP falls within the WorkWell Service area (South Cumbria ICB footprint).
  • You are over 18 or you are 16+ and enrolled on an apprenticeship
  • You have the right to work in the UK.
  • Your WorkWell Service believes you have a health-related barrier to work that can be met by the service.

WorkWell Support

WorkWell provides holistic support to help individuals overcome health-related barriers to employment.

Our team of WorkWell Coaches offers personalised support over approximately 12 weeks, including:

  • A person-centred, holistic assessment to identify individual barriers to work
  • A tailored return-to-work or thrive-in-work plan with clear objectives addressing physical, psychological, and social needs
  • Employer liaison (with consent) to share plans and offer work-related guidance
  • Advice for employers on reasonable workplace adjustments
  • Ongoing personalised work and health support, reviewing progress and recommending next steps
  • GP liaison (with consent) to support the Fit Note process and alignment of care

WorkWell also acts as a triage service, connecting participants to wider local health and employment support. Where additional needs are identified, individuals are referred to appropriate services, with continued follow-up to ensure all support is aligned with their employment goals.

About the WorkWell Service

How much does it cost?
Funding is provided through the NHS in Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), in partnership with Westmorland and Furness Council and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). As the service is fully funded, this means there is no cost to access the support provided by WorkWell South Cumbria.

Who is it for?
WorkWell is designed to support:

  • Unemployed individuals with low-level health conditions
  • Employees currently off work due to a health condition
  • Employees still in work but at risk of sickness absence or leaving employment due to health-related challenges
