SMI Service

In November 2022, the North Cumbria Community Mental Health Transformation program partnered with Cumbria Health, PCNs, and GP practices to provide annual health checks for people with Severe Mental Illness (SMI).

People with SMI face a much higher risk of poor physical health, leading to a life expectancy that is 15–20 years shorter on average. Compared to the general population, they are more likely to experience conditions like obesity, asthma, diabetes, COPD, and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, individuals with long-term mental health conditions are twice as likely to smoke, with the highest rates seen in those with psychosis or bipolar disorder. These health checks aim to address these risks and improve overall well-being.

The physical health checks cover key measurements such as height, weight (BMI), and blood pressure, along with simple tests for cholesterol and blood sugar levels. There’s also an opportunity to explore lifestyle factors like smoking, drinking, and exercise habits.

The process includes a review of current medications and time to reflect on mental health and overall well-being.

These appointments can be arranged at GP surgeries, other local practices, community venues, or even at home, depending on individual needs.
